Please keep some of these notes in mind about maintaining physical safety - of yourself and of the servers - while working with our physical hardware.

Static electricity

Before opening any server, ground yourself to discharge static electricity. This is usually as simple as touching something made of metal that touches the ground. This prevents damage to the server's electronic components. Do this frequently if you're working on the server for a while.

Fumes

If there's a bad smell in the server room, ventilate it and work there as little as possible. Identify the problem as quickly as possible and fix it.

Basic reminders

  • For any "it" in the set of "all physical things ECCS people work with", if it is too heavy, have someone help you move it.
  • Don't drop our servers and switches please.
