Here's how to update the kernel on a cairo node:

  1. Install the new kernel, preferably from RPM, even more preferably using yum.
  2. Open /boot/etc/yaboot.conf and add a new entry for the kernel, using an old one as a template.
  3. Run ybin -C /boot/etc/yaboot.conf -v.
  4. Reboot the node.
