Summary of Recommendations

Limited to basically one semester of work, the committee focused on six fundamental areas for which the Earlham community likely has the most environmental impact: Energy requirements for electricity, natural gas and fuel oil; Transportation, including College, student, and visitor, as well as College-sponsored travel; Solid Waste, including household, industrial, landscaping, toxic and hazardous materials; Water, including domestic, irrigation and storm, and sewage; Land Use and Stewardship, including the main campus, back campus, and Earlham-owned farmland and natural preserves; and, Master Planning and Construction.

   * Energy Conservation and Production: conserve in various ways, and produce using solar and wind technology.
   * Transportation: the area of greatest environmental impact, reduce travel where possible, maintain vehicles, purchase hybrid vehicles.
   * Solid Waste: reduce, reuse, recycle, compost.
   * Water: supplies of potable water are increasingly at risk, reduce use of domestic water, capture and use stormwater.
   * Land Use and Stewardship: use fewer chemical, mow less, remove invasive species and restore native species, stop industrial farming.
   * Planning, New Construction and Renovation: adopt green building standards and technologies, make long-term institutional commitments.

The Environmental Advisory Committee was formed and charged with continuing bringing environmental responsibility to campus. This committee is formed by two students, two administrative faculty, two teaching faculty, two staff, and the Director of Facilities, ex officio.
